6/11/2015

The Purple Librarian (Elizabeth Christley), Rowdy the Reading Dog and Treat Man (Joshua Christley) have been sighted recently all around Lake County.  These superheroes, also known as the Literacy League, are making sure everyone knows that the library has what you need to defeat boredom and unleash your imagination this summer!

Every young person is a candidate for Lake County Libraries 2015 Superhero Academy, this year’s Summer Reading Program. Registration begins the week of June 23rd, and the library is excited to present every registrant in the programs with a new book for their summer reading pleasure as well as free child pass and a two-for-one adult admission to the 2015 Oregon State Fair.

The Paisley Program, at the Community Center, will start Tuesday, June 23rd at 9:30 am for elementary-age (Preschool through 6th grade) and 11:00am for the teens (7th through 12th grade). The North Lake Program, at the Christmas Valley Library will start Thursday, June 25th at 9:00am for Preschool-6th grade and 11:00am for the teens.  The Lakeview Program, at the new Main Library, will start Wednesday, June 24th at 2pm for the teens and Thursday, June 26th for K-6.

In “Every Hero Has a Story”, the Superhero Academy for K-6, children will enjoy songs, games, crafts, stories, snacks, and activities like shooting off Alka-Seltzer rockets and making Kryptonite Slime.  Lakeview’s own Randy Dary will play and sing heroically at each location.

In the “UNMASK!” Teen program, participants will produce their own video book talks and trailers in addition to activities like making Heroic Headgear out of duct tape and creating an illusionary photo booth with props.  Everyone will have the chance to show off their super selves in the Lake County Libraries’ float in the Round-up Parade.

Each program is eight weeks long, and gives the participant a chance to earn a certificate signed by the governor of Oregon while having fun with their friends and preventing the summer slide in reading skills. The Summer Reading Program is supported in part by Oregon’s Ready to Read grant through the Oregon State Library and many local businesses and organizations.
