Restore the Book Budget with Christmas in July

7/22/2019

Several community members have given a gift to the community through Christmas in July at Lake County libraries. Donors have given almost $2,000 to restore the book budget, about a quarter of the $9,000 goal. While a few magazines and newspapers have found their sponsors, many are in danger of the library subscription being cancelled.

“As usual, Lake County’s generous residents stepping up to the plate to fill a need,” said Library Director Amy Hutchinson. “The almost $2,000 raised so far is from just 19 donors. When everyone contributes, whether it’s a little or a lot, it really can add up quickly,” said Hutchinson. The FY 2019-20 budget to buy the books, newspapers, magazines, audio books, and DVDs the library checks out to patrons was reduced due to decreased tax revenue. This is the first time the library has had to ask the community for funds for books in more than a decade.

In addition to monetary donations, the library also welcomes donations of gently used books, DVDs, and audio books in clean, good condition. If for some reason the library cannot use the item, the Friends of Lake County Library place items for sale in the ReRead Room store or online to generate more money to buy items for the library collection. Please note that the libraries have limited space for incoming book, DVD, and audio donations. If you have more than 1 box or 1 large grocery bag to drop off at one time, please contact your local library to coordinate.

All donations are tax-deductible. For questions or more information about the budget or the library, contact Library Director Amy Hutchinson at amyh@lakecountylibrary.org or 541-947-6019.
