Modern Odyssey in Lakeview

LAKEVIEW, Ore.—August 12, 2016— Literary Arts in association with Hand2Mouth Theatre Company will present a staged reading of “Ithaka,” a play by Andrea Stolowitz, on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. A contemporary retelling of Homer’s Odyssey, “Ithaka” won the 2015 Oregon Book Award in drama.

In the play, Lanie has just returned from her latest tour in Afghanistan but this time things are different; home doesn’t feel right and nothing makes sense. After a blow-up fight with her husband propels her to skip town, she undertakes an Odyssean journey through the American landscape, battling her monsters and trying to find her way home.
"Ithaka by Andrea Stolowitz is a bracingly original retelling of Homer’s Odyssey.  In Stolowitz’s revisioning of this ancient story, the Odysseus character is a female Marine captain returning from a tour in Afghanistan.  Grappling with the effects of PTSD, this returning veteran is having trouble re-entering her life back home.  After an explosive fight with her husband, she embarks on a road trip with another female veteran who turns out to be a ghost.  The play’s journey is as much figurative as it is literal. “ - Naomi Iizuka, Oregon Book Award judge in drama

Jonathan Walters of Hand2Mouth Theatre Company directs this dramatic reading featuring the talents of Bobby Bermea, Jenni Green Miller, Jaimie Lee, Maesie Speer, and Judson Williams. Hand2Mouth is a Portland-based theatre ensemble committed to creating original work.

Andrea Stolowitz’s plays have been presented nationally and internationally at theaters such as The Long Wharf, The Cherry Lane, and New York Stage and Film. A recipient of Artists Repertory Theater’s $25,000 New Play Commission, Andrea premiered Ithaka at the theatre in 2013. Her play Antarktikos was awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Drama.

This free public program is provided in partnership with Lake County Library District, PLAYA, and Literary Arts as part of the Oregon Book Awards author tour.
